English at Jewell Academy

‘English’ encompasses spoken language, reading, writing as well as spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.  At Jewell Academy, we pride ourselves on developing children who are not only equipped with a high standard of literacy skills and language fluency, but children who also have the character and resilience needed to be successful in the 21st Century.  We strive to ensure our children have the opportunity to practise and apply the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired through literacy lessons to other areas of the curriculum and teachers seek opportunities for children to discuss their work and the work of others.  At Jewell Academy, we provide all children with opportunities to read and examine high quality texts within class as well as the opportunity to select their own from our extensive school library. We frequently find opportunities to read for pleasure and encourage our children to aspire to be an authors by thinking like a writer and writing for their reader.

“The most important thing is to read as much as you can, like I did. It will give you an understanding of what makes good writing and it will enlarge your vocabulary.” J. K. Rowling

By the time our children leave Jewell Academy, we aim for our children to be confident and passionate speakers, readers and writers and have the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in modern Britain.
